This is one product that irks me to no end – it is one of the most useless, marketing-driven products I have ever seen on the shelves and in the mouths of cute, little unsuspecting babies.
“The first 3 years of your child’s life is an ideal time to begin lifelong healthy eating habits” says their website. I agree! So why on earth would you feed your baby this?
Babies need food that is nutritionally dense, meaning full of essential nutrients like protein, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals. They have such tiny stomachs that every mouthful needs to count. Baby Mum-Mums on the other hand are devoid of good nutrition – they are empty calories. Yet they are proud of their “all natural ingredients.” Since when is processed rice, potato starch, sugar and salt something to be proud of feeding your baby?! Feeding your little one these would actually displace other more important REAL foods that they should be eating.
Advertising Mum-Mums as the “first solid food for your baby” is nothing short of wrong and as far from actual CORRECT nutritional guidance. At 6 months when babies are starting solids they need iron-rich foods like meats, meat alternatives and/or infant cereals fortified with iron. Iron is such a key nutrient at that age and not getting enough iron can lead to serious health consequences. Baby Mum-Mum’s, although being advertised as a first food choice have…..ZERO iron (and well actually zero of any important nutrient). Ugh!!
And finally, the fact that they “dissolve easily in your child’s mouth with no mess” is NOT something to be proud of. Babies need to eat food with texture to teach them how to eat properly and ensure they are getting the right healthy foods. If your baby isn’t making a mess while eating, then there is something wrong.
