GetReal Recipe: The Glowing Green Smoothie!

Hey y’all! Here’s a recipe that needs to go on your regular rotation. It’s a quick way to get a whack of veggies in and have something that actually tastes good. Check out the Glowing Green Smoothie!

It falls in the category of a “don’t knock it till you try it” type of recipe. It tastes fresh, healthy, and sweet from the fruit. My friend remarked that the colour left something to be desired…I argued Kool-Aid comes in red, orange and green and that’s accepted as pretty standard (hello, Yellow #40!)

For this powerhouse veggie drink, you don’t need a juicer or a fancy Vitamix blender (although, it’ll do the trick). My ol’ faithful B&D blender works just fine.

What You Need:

  • 3-4 cups total of greens. Options: romaine, kale, spinach (I typically use organic baby kale and organic spinach)

  • 1 apple, sans core (variety – your choice)

  • 2 stalks celery, trimmed

  • 1/2 cucumber, peeled

  • 1 lime

  • 2-3 cups of water

What You Do:

1. Blend the greens (spinach, kale, etc) with the water first. It doesn’t take long to get them to a slushy-type consistency. The water will vary on your preference for thickness. (You’ll lose the need to measure after you make it a few times).

2. Add apple and blend. (I don’t peel mine – why bother? You miss the fibre plus you end up with pretty red flakes throughout final product).

3. Add celery, cucumber and the juice from the lime and blend until smooth.

4. Enjoy 1/2-1 cup at a time.

Best part is, you can make a whole whack of this stuff and it keeps in the fridge for days. I’ll make a batch and have it for a couple mornings in a row. Don’t forget to mix and match your greens and fruit. Vary this recipe with chard, arugula, and the like. If you like a thicker consistency, add a banana in. Just avoid melons, as they don’t combine well with other produce (it must be a personality thing).

Happy blending!
