This Skippy peanut butter gets the award for misleading food of the day! When people complain that interpreting labels and choosing foods is confusing, I can see why.
A natural peanut butter that you DON’T have to stir!? Sounds like an amazing food find, eh? NOT. This so called natural peanut butter is actually the same as every other generic peanut butter. It’s ingredient list: roasted peanuts, sugar, palm oil, salt. Sugar?! Palm oil?! Salt?! This does not a healthy PB make.
This is a far cry from the natural peanut butter that we recommend as a healthy choice who’s ONLY ingredient is: roasted peanuts (and that’s it folks!). And yes you have to stir this kind as the oil separates, but you only need to stir it once and then if you keep it in the fridge it will stay mixed. It really isn’t that much work.
The reason Skippy can get away with this “natural” claim is because there are no strict regulations on companies using this word on food labels. And technically it is “natural” as it contains no added preservatives, artificial colourings, etc. But buyer beware – it still ain’t a best buy in the peanut butter aisle.
Bottom line: always read ingredients lists and don’t believe everything they seem to claim on the front of the label. The healthiest peanut butter has one ingredient: peanuts.
So what’s your fav nut butter?? We’d like to know!
